Hi Parents!

Here is what we did today!

We had art. We learned about dinosaurs. Watched a video of a dinosaur eating another dinosaur. (Nick and Elizabeth)

We had writing. We worked on our The Snowy Day writing. We wrote about how he made snow angels in the snow. (Yahna)

We did math. We talked about capacity. It is how much something can hold. We tested some cups with snap cubes. (Sophia)

We talked about Martin Luther King Jr. We read a book and watched a video. His family called him M.L. (Abigail) The concepts of racism and discrimination were new to many students. I would suggest revisiting these with your student tonight at home!

We had Fundations. We practiced tapping out the letters to figure out the word. (Andy) This is similar to what it looks like in our classroom https://goo.gl/Jv79Ya

We had writing. We wrote about our weekend. (Kiernan)

We did morning meeting. We did our math workstations and rules. (Sophia)

We are doing closing meeting and snack. (Brendan)

Announcements!!

Our class earned another set of 100 Cougar Compliments! To celebrate, the class voted to have an electronic party or a “Bring Your Favorite Toy to School” party! We will be doing this on Thursday, January 19th since we couldn’t celebrate last Friday! I was originally planning on this coming Friday but since the forecast is calling for rain on Thursday , I thought it would be a better day. Each student is allowed to bring one small toy to school this day. This could be a small bag of legos or blocks, an action figure, a doll, stuffed animal, toy car, etc. No toy weapons please! Students are allowed to bring an electronic toy (such as a DS or small tablet) as long as the sound can be turned off or headphones can be plugged in. Please make sure it is fully charged or has new batteries. Please do not send valuable electronic toys because these toys will be unsupervised at times (recess, specials, etc.) Students will have the opportunity to play with these items at specific points in the school day. They will only be allowed to play with the toy in the classroom setting (not bus line, etc.) Please let me know if you have any questions!

The 100th Day of School is quickly approaching!  Currently, the 100th Day of School is scheduled for Thursday, February 2nd (unless we have any snow days between now and then). Our class is planning a celebration for the 100th Day of School in which all learning activities will be centered around the number 100.

As a part of our day, our class will be creating a “100th Day Museum.” Please have your child bring a collection of 100 things to school on Thursday, February 2nd.  The collection needs to be small enough for your child to carry to school.  Some examples might include 100 paperclips, cotton balls, pennies, cereal pieces, ribbons, beads, toothpicks, pencils, playing cards, etc.  Let your child use his/her imagination to come up with a unique, one of a kind collection. Our class will be displaying their collections on the 100th Day of School during math.

In addition, on the 100th Day of School each student will create his/her own special snack of with 100 pieces of food (like a trail mix).  For this special snack, we would like to ask for  donations.  Thank you if you have already sent in items! I made a Google Doc signup sheet so we can finish getting what we need!

Please sign up using this link: https://goo.gl/dr8Mn8 Please send in your snack donations by January 30th, so we can ensure we have enough snack for each student.  Each student will get 10 pieces of 10 snack foods for their trail mix.  Please make sure that your snack donation is enough for 22 students. Thank you for your help!

Our Cocoa Night Open House is this Thursday from 4:30-6 pm. Feel free to come at any point during that time! The focus of the evening is math, science, and technology. The STEM bus will be here to demonstrate activities and we will be playing a math game in our classroom.  Like a traditional open house, your child can show you around the classroom as well. There will be hot cocoa served during the evening to enjoy!

Have a great night!
