This is what we did today!

We had writing. We wrote letters to our principals. Tomorrow is principal’s day. (Izzy and Alex)

We had first graders come read to us. (Claire)

We had art. We made the background for our flowers. (Aidan)

We finished Mercy Watson Princess in Disguise. (Ella McClary)

We did math. We did take away. (Chase)

We signed our name on a piece of paper for the cooks. (Emily) Friday is national cook’s day! We signed a special card for our cafeteria staff!

We had Fundations. We tapped digraph words. (John)

We are going to have a pizza party! We reached 100 Cougar Compliments. (Ishaan) This will be next Friday, May 9th. More information to come!

Miss Hank’s friends came in to show us the signs to our Kindergarten program songs. (Alex)

Here is what we did today!

We had math. We played a math game. We had 2 dice and we rolled both of them. We counted how many in all and we colored a butterfly with that number. (Ella Murray and Vedant)

We had read aloud. We read Mercy Watson Princess in Disguise. (John)

We had writing. We wrote about our weekend. (Ishaan)

We had Fundations. We did magnet boards. (Alex and Audrey)

We had Miss Hanks class show us the motions for some new songs. (Claire) We will be doing a special Kindergarten singing program for parents at the end of the school year! We are learning some songs to sing for you at this program! More information about this program will be sent home this Friday. This event will be on Thursday, May 29th at 9:45 a.m. in the cafeteria. After the program you are welcome to join us for a picnic lunch outside. You may provide your own food or buy a sack lunch from the cafeteria.

Mrs. Hotchkiss showed us her medal from her running race. She also showed us some pictures. She went with her friends. (Kaela, Josselyn, and Chase) The class wanted me to share this picture! It was a great weekend! The kids were GREAT for the sub!! YAY!

Here is what we did today!

We did writing. We started a book about how to take care of the Earth. (Anthony)

We did Read Aloud. We read Mercy Watson Fights Crime. (Jenna)

We did a sort. We sorted the needs of humans, plants, and dogs. (Ishaan and Claire)

We did math. We lined up cube trains and saw which one had more or fewer. (Izzy and Alex) This was to help the kids understand that with subtraction we can also find the difference between 2 amounts.

We had Fundations. We wrote on our Fundations white boards. (Aidan)

Announcements
There will be a substitute teacher in my room tomorrow and Friday because I am headed to Nashville for my half marathon this weekend. If there are any changes in transportation, please make sure you call the office that morning to let them know so they can communicate the information with the sub. There will not be a daily email sent home on these days as well.

We had math. Ms. Miller and Ms. Pence did math with us. We said taking away is a fewer number or smaller number. (Josselyn) The class acted out subtraction stories!

We read a book. We read Mercy Watson Goes For a Ride. Mercy flew out of the car because it stopped. Everyone else had their seat belt on. (Izzy and Aidan)

Next week, we will be talking about taking care of our Earth! We will be doing a recycling sort on Earth Day. On Tuesday, April 22nd, please send in a piece of recycling with your child that can fit inside their backpack. This could be a metal can, paper, plastic bottle or container, cardboard cereal box, etc.

Here is what we did today!

We read a book called Mercy Watson Goes For a Ride. (Nathan)

We played a Mercy Watson game. We played the matching game. (Chase and Vedant)

We had Fundations. We had magnet boards. We did nonsense words! (Lauren) We practicing tapping and building silly words!

We had science. We looked inside of a bean! We saw a baby plant and the baby plant food. The food for the plant was called the food storage. We got to peel off the seed coat. (Claire, Charley, and Anthony)

We had Daily 5. (Kaela)

We had music. We did the parachute. (Izzy and Ella McClary)

We had writing. We labeled a bean and we got to make a bean. (Ishaan)

We did math. We took away numbers. We counted how many there were left over. (Aidan)

We talked about STOP with Miss Pence and Miss Miller. (Daniel) This is a problem solving strategy. We discussed talking about the problem, talking about our options, and then picking the best option to solve the problem.

We made an iMovie and posted it on my YouTube channel about living and non-living things! I took the pictures from our nature walk yesterday and recorded some of the kids explanations of why the item in the picture was a living or non-living thing! Enjoy! Here is what we did today!

We are going to go on a nature walk. We are looking for non-living things and living things. (Ella McClary) We took pictures of living and non-living things that we found. We will be making these pictures into an iMovie about living and non-living things tomorrow!

We had math. We learned how to do subtraction. (Audrey) To introduce subtraction, we talked through a few stories about separating. For example, we talked about if there were 6 ducks in a pond and 2 flew away, how many would be left? We practicing counting the pictures to help figure out how many were left in the story.

We did math. We had a group of 10 and another number to make a whole. We made a number sentence. (Nathan and Anthony)

We had Fundations. We tapped out words. We did the short vowel sound and the long vowel sound. (Alex)

We had morning job. We counted the boxes and put it with the right numbers. (Jenna)


We watched a living and non-living video. To tell if it living it is probably moving and breathing. (Josselyn)

We read a book called Mercy Watson To The Rescue. She is crazy! She is a pig who loves toast! (Ella McClary) This is one of my favorite children’s book series from Kate DiCamillo!

We had Daily 5. (Ishaan)

We had Fundations. We talked about the –ck digraph and we did magnet boards. (Kaela and Anthony) We talked about how when we hear a short vowel sound and then a /k/sound at the end it is a –ck digraph!

We had math. We broke cubes into 2 parts. (John)

We had funny weather. There was rain and snow in Spring! (Ella Murray)

Here is what we did today!

We had writing. We wrote letters to the 4th graders. They are doing a MAP test. (Izzy and Ella McClary)

We had Fundations. We did white boards. (Lauren)

We got to see pictures of Claire’s new dog. (Anthony)

We had Daily 5. We got to bring some of our Daily 5 books home for the weekend. (Kaela and Charley) This weekend we are trying something new! Your student will be coming home with a plastic bag that contains 2 reading group books of their choosing! To help your children practice their reading strategies, please have your student read these books to you this weekend! Please have your student return these books on Monday so we can have them in our book boxes for Daily 5 time. Enjoy!!

Next week we are sending letters of encouragement to Mrs. Kinkade’s 4th graders for MAP testing! I thought it would be fun to send the letters with a “Smarties” candy attached! If you would like to donate a bag of Smarties for Monday please reply to this email!

Here is what we did today!

We had P.E. (Ishaan)

We had science. One cup got evaporated by the sun and one didn’t! (Daniel) We put 2 cups of water by the windowsill. Each cup had a thermometer and were filled to the same water level. However, one cup was covered in plastic wrap. We noticed that by the end of the day the water level of the cup without plastic wrap was below the line that was drawn and was lower than the other cup! We talked about evaporation and how some of the water from the uncovered cup became water vapor! We also noticed that the cups were the same temperature as the air outside!

We went into the computer lab. (Lauren)

We had writing workshop. We did our opinion. We wrote about sliding on the slide or swinging on the swing. (John) Students decided if they liked sliding or swinging better and then wrote their reasons why.  We have been practicing using the word “because” in our sentences.

Miss Pence and Miss Miller read us a book called The Cloud Book. (Emily)

We made a cloud project with Miss Pence and Miss Miller. (Ella McClary) Students were able to pick one of the types of clouds that we learned about to make using cotton balls: Cirrus (high in the sky, wispy like horse tails), cumulus (big puffy clouds) or stratus (low clouds that are as flat as a pancake). We even had a few cumulonimbus storm clouds!! Ask your student about the hand motions that go with each type of cloud to help us remember!

Here is what we did today!

We had library. (Dominika)

We had writing. We took our plan sheet and wrote 3 reasons why we liked fruits or vegetables. (Josselyn) We are working on our opinion writing.

We had science. We learned about thermometers. They check temperature. (Daniel)

We did math. We wrote addition sentences in a different way. We used 2 tens frames and we used 3 numbers in the teens. (Jenna, Aidan, and Charley) We talked about how 10+3=13 means the same thing when written 13=10+3. We talked about how the equals sign means “the same as”. We practiced drawing counters into 10 frames to help us write addition number sentences. We talked about how we can see numbers in the teens as a group of 10 and ones left over.

Here is what we did today!

We had art. We made texture necklaces out of clay. (Aidan)

We read a book called Weather at Your Fingertips. (Ella McClary) We began talking about temperature and thermometers!

We had writing. We finished the last page of our weather book. (Ella Murray) These are coming home today! We summarized the weather for the 5 days we recorded! We decided there were mostly cloudy days with no precipitation and strong winds!

We had math. We did counting on. (Izzy) We worked on counting on from 10 to count numbers in the teens.

We also talked about “trick words” in Fundations. These are words, like word wall words, that will need to know “quick and fast”. They are words that we cannot tap to solve like “they”, “you”, and “are”.

We also celebrated Noah’s birthday with a special birthday snack!

We had math. We looked at numbers in the 100 chart rows and talked about the differences. (Ishaan and Charley) We talked about how the numbers in the ones place are the same when you look down the rows. We talked about how whenever you go down on the one hundreds chart, it is 10 more!

Here is what we did today!

The forecast says it is going to rain at dismissal. (Audrey)

We had art. (Izzy)

We worked on our weather books. We had strong winds and, this morning, we had a lot of hail and rain. (Aidan)

We had math. We learned 14, 15, and 16. (Ella Murray and Daniel) We have been working on place value. We talked about how we can look at 14 as one group of 10 and 4 extra ones. We practiced putting this information into number sentences (10+4=14).

We read the book Who Likes The Rain? (Josselyn)

We did Daily 5. (Jenna)

We had writing. We sorted facts and opinions. (Ella McClary and Charley)

We had Fundations. We did our chunks. (Ishaan)

On Friday, we are going to have a backwards day. (Daniel) We met our school wide goal for Cougar Compliments! To celebrate we will be having a backwards day on Friday! The kids can come to school wearing something backwards.

We did a weather book. (Claire) Each student started their own “My Weather Book”. We will be charting the cloud cover, precipitation, and wind speed for the next 5 days!
