Hi Parents!

Here is what we did today!

We did lunch. (Leo)

We went to art. We drew lines with smelly markers. (Evie and Avie)

We went in the cafeteria and did our pledge. (Presley) We had our first PBS assembly today!

We made hats. (Jackson)

We had recess inside. (Caleb)

We had a rainy day. (Sophie)

We watched a video about friendship. (Sarah)

We did Jesse’s Me Bag. (Lux)

We did my name poster. We wrote down what food and what color I like. (Jesse)

We wrote Jesse’s name. (Presley)

We drew a picture of Jesse. (Logan)

We got out the whiteboards to write Jesse’s name. (Zellie)

We got to the Zero the Hero Stomp because it was the 10th day of school. (Caleb)

We did Jesse’s name cheer. (George)

We read The Crayon Box That Talked. (Cora)

We did the schedule. (Sarah)

A September calendar is in the folder and is attached!

Don’t forget picture day is Wednesday and Grandparent’s Day is on Friday! If your child’s grandparent is not able to come, you are welcome to invite an aunt, uncle, special friend, etc. If no one is available, parents you are welcome to attend in their place! If your child does not have someone coming, please let me know so I can find someone for them! Thanks!!

Here is what we did today!

We read How Full is Your Bucket. (Ellen)

We had snack. (Presley)

We did Jackson’s name poster. (Logan)

We talked about bucket fillers. (Sophie)

We practiced our letters with Echo the Owl. (Phoebe)

Mrs. Baker came and we brought her toy dog. He danced. (Avie)

We did a brain break. (Sarah)

We measured. (Jesse) Today in math we talked about length! We talked about how we know if something is the same length, shorter, or longer.

We did math workstations. (Cora)

Hi Parents!

Here is what we did today!

We did morning buzz. (Jesse)

We had playtime in the morning. (Sarah)

We played with friends. (Leo)

We did Evie’s Me Bag. (Presley)

We made Time for School books. We colored and read them. (Jackson and Liam)

We went outside. (Sophie)

We ate lunch. (Caleb)

We read Huggapotamus. We did the moves that went with the words. (Cora) We worked on vocabulary words, discussed problem/solution, characters, and connections to the book.

We learned how to log into a computer. (Phoebe)

We went to the library. (Avie)

We had closing meeting. (Evie)

We wrote the letters b and f on our boards. (George)

We named the characters in the book Huggapotamus. (Zellie)

We wrote Evie’s name on the white boards. (Logan)

For math we did math stations and pattern block puzzles. (Sarah)

We did calendar. (Avie)

Tomorrow I will be leaving at 2:30 pm for a doctor’s appointment. Mrs. Wilson will be subbing at the end of the day for me. Please let me know of any transportation changes early on in the day. Closing meeting notes will not be sent home tomorrow because of this. Thank you for understanding!

When the kids earn 10 Class Dojo points, they have the choice of picking from my prize basket! If you ever have small toys (like Happy Meal size) or kids items that you think would work well in a prize basket, please donate them my way! Thank you!

Hi Parents!

Here is what we did today!

We went outside. (Lux)

We had lunch. (Sophie)

We read Huggapotamus. (Presley) We talked about what it means to be a good friend.

We did art. We did an experiment with crayons. (Cora and Avie)

We went on a number hunt. (Phoebe)

We made We Like School books. (Jackson) We added this mini book to our book boxes!

We had snack. (Logan)

Today was Ellen’s Me Bag. (Sarah) We also did her name poster, name cheer, and name page! We practiced writing the letters in her name and drawing with realistic colors!

We did our rules. (George)

We watched the announcements. (Caleb)

We had playtime. (Evie)

It is Olivia’s birthday! (Jesse)

Today during Work Work time we started Heggerty word games. We worked on rhyming, building and separating compound words, isolating beginning and ending sounds, and so on. We also practiced the letters b and f in Fundations. We learned about the letter sounds and how to write these letters on the handwriting lines.

Class Dojo
You’ve probably noticed that on Class Dojo I can give points for positive behavior and take away points for negative behavior. I only mark negative behaviors if there are multiple reminders a day during these first few weeks. Make sure you are checking this daily so you can touch base with your child at night! Just click the “report” button under your child’s monster. I will always call or email if there are major issues at school. We are working hard on sitting with a “learner look” at school, making sure we raise our hand before we speak, and listening when the speaker is talking. This takes lots of practice! These are good items to review at home as well!

Here is what we did today!

We had music. (Sarah and Liam)

We made a Rainbow Fish. (Cora and Presley)

We played outside. (Zellie, George, and Jackson)

We had lunch. (Lux and Logan)

We did Cora’s Me Bag. (Jesse) We practiced writing Cora’s name on the white boards, made her name poster, did her name cheer, and made her name page! We are working on drawing realistic pictures with 5 or more colors and filling up our white space!

We watched the Rainbow Fish. (Cora and Sarah)

We all got to jump on the trampoline! (Jesse)

We did Echo the Owl. (Cora)

We wrote the letter t on our new special boards. (George)

Lots and lots of important stuff coming home in the folder today!! Please make sure and look it over this weekend!!

We played with shapes. (George) We explored pattern blocks in math!

We learned moves for the words in Rainbow Fish. (Presley) We learned some vocabulary words!

In your child’s folder today you will find a family homework project. The kids will be creating a Me Doll to hang up in the classroom! I allowed the kids to pick the skin color that they felt represented them best. Please decorate this paper person, cut it out, and return it to school when it is finished.

Wednesday, August 21 Closing Meeting Notes


Hi Parents!

Here is what we did today!

We went to the cafeteria. (George)

We did our name painting. (Liam)

We went outside. (Sophie and Caleb)

We had inside play time. (Lux and Presley )

We went to the library. (Sarah)

We did our Chester Loves School books. (Evie and Jackson) These little paper books are the first books in our book boxes! We practiced reading it together and pointing to the words.

We learned about sharing. (Presley)

We read Rainbow Fish. (Phoebe)

We practiced the letter t with Echo the Owl. (Ellen) This is part of our Fundations program! At the beginning of the year, this program focuses on letters, sounds, and letter formation.

It was Mrs. Hotchkiss’ Me Bag day. She has a dog. (Caleb) We learned how to spell my name and did a name cheer! The kids also made a name page that will be added into a class book when we are finished with Me Bags!

In your child’s backpack you will find a blue MCE Kindergarten Cougar shirt! These are gifts from PTA! We will wear these on field trips, etc. Kids are encouraged to wear them on Fridays when the school wears MCE gear! I had the kids try them on but if you are unhappy with the size please send it back and let me know what size you would prefer. We have Youth XS, S, and M.

Hi Parents!

Here is what we did today! We had another great day!

We ate snack. (Olivia)

We went to art. We practiced different types of lines in art. (Jackson and Phoebe)

We went outside 2 times. (Evie and Lux)

We did end of the day play time. We played at centers. (Zellie and Logan)

We read The Kissing Hand. (Presley and Sarah) In the book, a little raccoon is nervous about being away from his mom on his first day of school and she kisses the palm of his hand and tells him that if he is feeling scared or lonely, he can press his palm to his cheek and feel her love with him. Your child might ask for a Kissing Hand from you to take with them or might offer you a Kissing Hand!

We read The Pigeon Has to go to School. (Jesse)

We made a Chester the raccoon puppet. (Cora and George)

We ate lunch. (Caleb)

We played The Kissing Hand game. (Presley)

Make sure your student brings back their blue folder every day! Some days it will come home empty while other days will have lots of papers. Please try to check every night!

Tennis shoes are encouraged on a daily basis since we spend so much time outside. Also please make sure little girls have little shorts on under their skirts and dresses since we sit criss-cross on the learning rug.

Please make sure your student has a snack in their backpack every day!

They are getting into the swing of things! Thank you for all your support at home!! We are having lots of fun!

Tell grandparents to save the date for Grandparent’s Day on September 6th. More information to come!

Hi Parents!

At the end of the day, we held a closing meeting to reflect on our school day!
Here is what we did today (in the words of the kids)!

We played with toys. (Jesse)

We went to music. (Sarah)

We read books. (Presley)

We read a book about how a girl went to school. She came to school in funny ways. (George) This book is called How Will I Get to School This Year? The kids did a Smartboard sort for how they were getting home today. We counted the number in each group.

We read Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten. (Evie)

We ate lunch. (Caleb and Lux)

We builded. (Phoebe)

We went outside 2 times. (Logan, Zellie, Sophie, and George)

We made hats. (Jackson and Jesse) We made “I Rocked the First Day of Kindergarten” hats! Pictures are on Class Dojo!

We made books. (Cora)

We had a great first day! We practiced lots of class routines and procedures. We learned about the classroom rules, line order, and how to earn points on Class Dojo! I have posted pictures for everyone to enjoy!

In the folder today you will find your child’s first homework assignment! This is our Me Bag project! Each child will have their own special day. Some kids start this week so please make sure and check the schedule!

If your child is Parent Pick Up, there is a blue sign of your last name in your child’s folder. Please hang this is our passenger car window when you are in the PPU line to help speed up the pick up process.

Please make sure your child returns their blue take home folder every day to school.

Chess Club: The Mill Creek K-3rd Chess Club welcomes all kids, so if your child does not know how to play the royal game and would like to learn, please join our club. The club is open to students of all skill levels from K through 3rd grade, including beginners who have never played chess before, as well as experienced players. A desire to learn is all that is required.
The Fall semester consists of 10 lessons and the cost is $45.00 per player with a T-Shirt. Lessons start the week of 9/4/2019
Deadline to register is Friday, August 30th
This year all K-3 chess club meetings will be held in the mornings from 7:15am to 8:15 am.  There are sessions on Wednesdays and Thursday mornings. 
  • Wednesdays: 9/4, 9/11, 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30 and 11/6.
  • Thursdays: 9/5, 9/12, 9/19, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24, 11/7 and 11/14.

Welcome 19-20 Kindergarten Families!!

Hello Kindergarten Families!!

My name is Vesta Hotchkiss and I will use this site to communicate with you on a daily basis! At the end of each day I will have a closing meeting with the Kindergartners. The kids will reflect upon the day by telling about what they learned and what we did at school! I will make a blog post and email the meeting notes to you!

I also use Class Dojo to communicate with you! I love to post pictures of all the wonderful things we are doing in our classroom! I will post behavior updates and pictures on Class Dojo daily (hopefully). I will be sending home details on how to sign up!
